Sometimes when we make big design decisions, like where to put the couch, we feel bound to what we decide. It took so much to finally choose a spot, so moving it again would be a hassle. BUT, the objective is not just to move the couch. The objective is to find a place in which the couch harmonizes with other elements in the room; the place where you, the dweller, can function optimally.

Pictured above is the current arrangement of my front room. Opposite the wall in the photo, I have a desk, a little chair and a side table (will share photos later). This is the 6th or 7th set up since I moved in 1.5 years ago. I’m really happy with this set up. & I was once really happy with the 5th, 4th & 3rd setups. &I’m positive I’ll eventually change the current arrangement. Maybe tomorrow. Maybe in 6 months. Either way, I’ll continue to listen to how the space makes my mind and body feel and when it’s time to rearrange, I’ll approach the task with excitement, not dread or overwhelm.

The key to finding harmony in the home is to allow the space to evolve as you do. Maybe one day you find the perfect spot for the couch. And maybe it feels right for two or three months, six months or a year. But if ever you begin to wonder if the couch might look better in another position, this means you have grown. This means the person who found the once perfect place is now seeing things with different eyes. This means the arrangement is no longer satiating you and where you’re presently at in life.

So test it out! Don’t allow yourself to feel intimated when it’s time to redesign. Because again, the objective is not to move things around. The objective is to create a space where you can reset, recharge and when necessary, be 100% productive. Pay attention to the way you feel as you rearrange. Maybe you thought the couch would flow smoothly by the front window, but when you actually move it, you feel a bit of unease. Keep going. Try again. Maybe you feel disease when you place it by the fireplace. Keep going. Allow unease to fall away as you rule out what doesn’t work.
